The name Maccabeus derives from the Hebrew word ‘Maccaba’ meaning hammer. The Jews saw him as the hammer God used to crush Antiochus IV and the advance of Hellenism. Maccabeus was a man of deep faith and prayer. In every adversity, he turned to Yahweh in prayer. It was from his faith in the Lord that he drew strength and inspired confidence in his followers.
